Remembering Drew

A Birthday Letter from Uncle Scott

• By Wendy Murphy

Hi Drew,

Happy birthday. It’s hard to believe it’s been over half a year since you passed. Even though you’re gone, you live in our memories. I think of you often when I see the color yellow, which is also my favorite color, and when I hear the Beatles, number nine, number nine, number nine…. I have to admit though I prefer the Rolling Stones. Something about their energy and the blues is appealing to me.

One of my favorite memories of you is your Garbage Pail Kid’s T shirt. You were wearing it and your mom told you you’ll never get a girlfriend wearing a T shirt like that and playing video games. Totally unphased you looked at her and said “I’ll find a girl that likes those things.” That you did.

I also remember playing a game on the Gameboy with you in the Poconos. I think you had practiced and were certain of winning. It was a game I had spent way too much time with and much to your and Paul’s surprise I won. Probably good for me we only played one game.

Another fond memory I have is when you were little and visiting your grand mom and grand pop in Pennsylvania. You used the term panties when referring to your underpants. I’m not sure if that is an English term or the influence of your mom and sister. Regardless, Uncle Todd and I felt the need to “man up” your vocabulary.

Covid has made it a different kind of year since you left. I guess by historical standards it’s not bad but it has been something we’ve had to adjust too. Covid has had a lot of people thinking of the balance between risk and living life. I guess that’s the case with many things.

Paul is doing well. He always looked up to you. You could see it when the cousins got together. Hopefully he’ll take what he learned from you and apply it as he starts his life as an adult.

You are truly missed and the world is a lesser place without you.

Love,

Uncle Scott
